Have a social media detox


Don’t get us wrong, social media can be brilliant – it can drive change, connect us with long-lost friends and keep us up-to-date with causes that are important to us. At Advent of Change, we’ve used social media as a tool to spread the word about our AoC calendar and to connect with our supporters – including, of course, the World-Changer Challenge!


However, there is undeniably a dark side of social media, particularly when it’s not used in moderation. If you do find yourself checking your apps more and more, or are guilty of any of the below (we certainly are), this might just be the challenge for you!


  • Checking social media as soon as you wake up and just before you fall asleep
  • Comparing yourself to online friends or celebrities
  • Disappearing down a ‘rabbit hole’ of comments or threads
  • Constantly refreshing your apps to see how many ‘likes’ your latest post received.

Studies have discovered that the more time you spend on social media, the more likely you are to develop depression, and this is unsurprising when we think that we often base our self-esteem on the amount of likes and follows we receive. And an overuse of social media also means we are missing out on more meaningful experiences, such as interacting with family and friends, and missing nature as we walk.


Another aspect of social media that will affect our quality of life and mental health is the habit of comparing ourselves to others – feeling sad if we think our lives don’t match up to theirs and also getting FOMO (“fear of missing out”). It is important to remember that social media is a false reality – think about how you carefully filter a photo to portray the best possible image…everyone else is doing it too!


So, our challenge to you this week is to take a social media detox. Deactivate your accounts or uninstall your apps for as long as you feel you can. Even if it’s just a morning, why not swap your smartphone for a walk in the park? Live in the moment and see how it positively affects your life – you never know, you may want to make social media detoxes a part of your weekly routine.


Usually at this point we’d ask you to let us know how you get on with this week’s challenge via social media (oh, the irony!) Far be it for us to encourage you to log back on to Twitter to tell us how great it felt to be away – however, if you do wish to drop us a line when you’ve finished your detox, please feel free to do so.
